The North Gate, also known as Cheng’en Gate, was constructed during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. As the only remaining Minnan architectural city gate in Taipei, it once served as a gateway from the “Inner City” to “Dadaocheng” during that time. Despite facing the threat of demolition due to urban development, the North Gate has been recognized as a significant cultural heritage site as the notion of preserving cultural assets gains momentum, representing the only preserved historical image of Taipei City during the Qing rule. In 2017, the completion of the “North Gate Square” connected it with other notable historic buildings such as the Taipei Post Office, Mitsui Warehouse and the Railway Department Park of the National Taiwan Museum. Together, they weave the history of the entire old Taipei City and have transformed into popular tourist attractions in Taipei.
